5 Tips to go from Rookie to Wildlifer

Wildlifer: Definition: - a person who enjoys, is passionate about nature/wilderness/conservation. May or may not live in the jungles. Applies equally to nature lovers be they in the field or armchairs.
 Pronunciation: wild-lie-fur
Origins of the word: based on a guess - the Indian subcontinent.
If you’re newly bitten by the wildlife love bug then these 5 Tips will help you navigate the safari world like a pro.
  1. Advance Booking is key.
An impulse wilderness getaway can prove to be a disappointment
Safari tickets for most of the popular National Parks/Tiger reserves in India get sold out months in advance. You can book the tickets yourself online or ask your hotel if they can assist. (Almost all wilderness hotels will offer this service).
  1. Pack right
Comfortable clothing that cover arms and legs – keep you warm in winter and shield from mosquitos/sun burn in the summer. Cap, walking shoes and sunscreen are a must. Binoculars are a great addition and worth investing in for future trips. Wearing earthy colours is generally recommended and looks great on social media too.
  1. Safari Etiquette
  • Make the conscious decision to enjoy the wilderness in its entirety.  A blinkered approach to searching only for the big cats can lead to hours of rushing around which may or may not lead to a big cat sighting.   The truth is, the guides and drivers are always on the lookout for the predators, even without the tourists pressuring them.
  • Keep calm and do not harass animals for the sake of photos/videos.
  • IF you’ve been lucky to have a fantastic animal sighting, refrain from showing off to passing vehicles with tourists who may not have been as lucky. It isn’t a competition.

  1. Wildlife hotel Etiquette
  • Be respectful of your natural surroundings. Blasting music & littering are a big No-No. Other guests may have come to enjoy a much-needed peaceful break, not to be privy to your karaoke skills
  • Be a Conservation Warrior & offer to carry your dry waste back with you. The jungle lodges are set in remote areas & it is indeed a challenge for them to dispose waste responsibly. You would be doing your bit for the environment.

  1. Take time to vibe with the wilderness
Safari holidays can be hectic affairs. One is up before dawn for morning safaris, in an open vehicle for hours. It is a good idea to keep some time to unwind and actually do nothing. A leisurely walk on the nature trail or a stroll around the local bazar can make for wonderful experiences.
